The Trip
October 31–November 26, 2023
Opening Reception: Thursday, November 2nd: 6–8pm
Interview with the Artist: Thursday, November 16th: 6–8pm
Chelsea NY: Viridian Artists is pleased to present The Trip, Marco Lando’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. On view from October 31 through November 25, it will feature an installation of recent video work and photographs that continue the artist’s interest in creating celestial mise-en-scenes that, portentous and dreamy, evoke the loss of symbolic order. The Opening Reception will take place on November 2, from 6–8pm.
An interview and talk with the artist will take place on Thursday, November 16 from 6–8pm.
The Trip comprises a series of four eponymous black-and-white videos (all created in 2023), wherein stark and solemn skyscrapers float through cosmic space. These architectural paeans to a lost civilization slowly rise, tilt, and move with no apparent purpose. Unmoored by gravity and function, they are sci-fi ruins from a defunct planet set adrift in a cold, godless universe. Though the movements in each video represent the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west), the paths they trace ultimately lead nowhere. So too, the lights that inexplicably blaze on and off in their windows punctuating the darkened skies like a grid of stars, illuminate nothing beyond their contours.
Lando treats his buildings like living entities – almost human, but not quite – and they gain their eery, forlorn affect accordingly. The soundtrack accompanying these videos reflects this ghostly quality with its merging of the mechanical and organic. Combining the sounds of creaking metal with whale cry recordings, it distorts and manipulates any distinction between the two. Rather than convey ideas of a harmonious, efficient technology, Lando’s celestial music is marked by imperfection and uncertainty.
Accompanying the video installation will be a suite of photographs from Lando’s ongoing series, Alchemy (2016-present). These black-and-white images depicting still versions of the imagery in the videos are also manipulated digitally, and function as freeze frames or stills. More romantic in tone, they offer a softness that counters the ominous sensibility of the videos, injecting an atmospheric quality to the overall installation that invites viewers to imagine themselves drifting along with the buildings in a somnolent bliss.

Celebrated Biochemist and Fine Arts Photographer Wally Gilbert Unveils a Captivating Exhibition at Viridian Artists
WALLY GILBERT “Patterns of Reality”
October 3 - 28, 2023
Opening Reception, Thursday, October 5, 6–8 pm
Saturday Reception, October 14, 4-6 pm
Chelsea, NYC – Viridian Artists is honored to present the remarkable works of Wally Gilbert, a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist and accomplished fine arts photographer, in his seventh solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition will begin October 3rd and will continue through October 28th with an opening reception Thursday, October 5th, 6–8pm and a weekend reception Saturday, October 14th, 4-6 pm. Wally Gilbert's exploration of digital imagery, blending his scientific acumen with creative expression, takes center stage in an exhibition that promises to captivate and inspire.
Wally Gilbert's unique journey spans both the realms of science and art. Having been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1980 for the discovery of ways of sequencing genes, his career has significantly shaped the scientific landscape around us today. However, his pursuit of creativity brought him to the art world as well. For decades, Wally Gilbert has been at the forefront of digital imagery experimentation, pushing the boundaries of perception and reality. In this latest exhibition, he delves into a body of work that resonates with patterns, forms, and colors inspired by the natural world. Through a meticulous process of transformation, he converts images of nature into multi-chromed geometric and crystalline compositions, each a mesmerizing exploration of the intersection between the tangible and the abstract.
Having presented more than 50 solo exhibitions across the globe, this body of work continues his artistic evolution. Wally Gilbert's compositions, vividly printed on aluminum, invite viewers into a realm where the familiar morphs into the mysterious. A solitary recognizable object emerges amidst a sea of abstract forms, inviting contemplation while the interplay of colors leads the eye along paths that traverse the boundaries of the real and the imagined.
One might discover themselves in the midst of a gold-laced network of blue branches or gazing upon a curving black and green tiled floor in "Difference." The evocative piece titled "Wings" captures the essence of a flower's core or an insect's countenance, blurring the lines between reality and the surreal. This exhibition presents a unique opportunity for art and science enthusiasts to experience the fusion of two seemingly disparate worlds. The artist will be present, offering viewers a chance to engage with the creator and gain insight into the intricate process behind these visionary works.
We hope that you can see these works in person and meet their creator. Catalogs from past exhibitions by the artist are available at the gallery and on Viridian’s website at www.virdianartists.com and also on Amazon.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Please List
“Amongst the Gems:
Improvised Light and Dark Narratives of Tangible Fantasies”
recent work by
KATHLEEN KING
September 5 – 30, 2023
Reception: Thursday, September 7, 6–8pm
Chelsea: Viridian Artists is pleased to present “Amongst the Gems: Improvised Light and Dark Narratives of Tangible Fantasies,” recent work by Kathleen King on exhibit September 5 – September 30. There will a reception with the artist on Thursday, September 7 from 6pm to 8pm.
In Kathleen King’s most recent exhibit at Viridian, she starts with digital prints on canvas of found objects, dried plants, bits of plastic, ribbons, and other, often disparate materials. Over these photo-based digital prints, she has painted passages of, first, acrylic, then, oil paint, creating a mixed media barrage of illusory images on canvas.
King feels the photographic elements in the digital print lend an anchor of observed realism to her themes of lightly and darkly whimsical fantasy narratives which evolve from her improvised passages of paint. Kat invites viewers to give the compositions their own interpretative meanings.
The artist has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the SAIC Print Media Dept., Loyola University in Chicago as an Adjunct Professor, in the Fine Arts Dept. and recently, Representational Drawing and Watercolor at Korea University’s International Summer Campus Program as a Visiting Adjunct Professor.
Ms. King will be conducting a 2-day workshop in hand-printing monoprints at the Naples Art Institute, February 15 & 16, 2024 in Naples, Florida.
Kathleen King has been represented by the Viridian Artists gallery since 2001. We hope you will enjoy the show and enter the fantasy world the artist is presenting and sharing with you. Many of the artworks are small scale and reasonably priced.

SABA BESIER
“STRANGE & SUBLIME”
July 18 – August 12, 2023
Opening Reception, Saturday, July 22, 4–6PM
Artist’s Talk, Saturday, August 12, 4–6 PM
Chelsea, NYC: Viridian Artists is pleased to present an exhibition of porcelain sculptures by Saba Besier. The exhibition begins July 18 and continues through August 12 with an Opening Reception Saturday, July 22, 4–6pm and a closing reception Saturday, August 12, 4–6pm. The artist will give a talk on the last Saturday of the show at 4pm.
Saba Besier’s aquatic sculptures of porcelain were referred to as “mutant beauties” when her art was recently written about in Terrain Magazine. The artist has continued to create works that combine her interest in science fiction and her ongoing concern about what’s happening in our oceans with the sculptural objects that are being presented in her first solo exhibition at Viridian Artists.
The creation of these “mutant beauties” was first inspired when she collaborated with her father to create a collection of stylized botanicals together, mixing watercolor and photography, works which found a market in hotels and luxury design. After her father’s passing, she re-examined her artistic career and began experimenting three-dimensionally with new materials and creating imagery from her memories of the hidden worlds in the oceans of Polynesia that she had once seen through a glass-bottomed boat.
Porcelain, with its luminosity, has become her new medium. She feels it adds “an element of hope to the despondency of my subject,” the oceanic life of plants and sea-creatures.
The artist has found that the required mastery of craft techniques and a mixing of unlikely media satisfies her need to meld her formal art training with alchemy to create these “freaks of nature.” Besier has produced works which are truly beautiful and arresting in their complexity and uniqueness.
Saba Besier’s artworks continue to honor and remind us of the unique underwater creatures and flora that are being depleted in our disrupted ecosystem, for she brings to life these nearly lost organisms under the sea with her other-worldly sculptural creations. We hope that you can see these amazing works in person and meet their creator

ELLEN BURNETT
"No Certainties"
June 20 – July 15, 2023
Opening Reception Thursday, June 22, 6–8pm
Artist’s Talk on the last Saturday, July 15, 4–6pm
Chelsea, NYC: Viridian Artists is pleased to present "No Certainties,” an exhibition of collage and assemblage by Ellen Burnett. The exhibition opens June 20 and continues through July 15, 2023, with an opening reception Thursday, June 22, 6–8pm and a closing reception Saturday, July 15, 4–6pm. The artist will give a talk on the last Saturday of the show at 4pm and will be present on Saturday afternoons during the exhibition to talk with visitors about her work.
Many of the artworks in this exhibit are small works, created during these recent times of disruption. As the artist says, these were “times that hold the unpleasant threat of the unexpected” and
“My life feels ragged and untidy
And space is limited
So the works grow smaller…”
Ellen Burnett’s art contains narratives, and possess titles, that speak of moments both remembered and imagined. The titles the artist has assigned to each piece illustrate her interpretation of the work and how it spoke to her, and give the viewer the chance to observe the world through her gaze. For instance, “In the Time of the Virus” was created at the beginning of the Covid quarantine, with the artist painting her way out through a portal into an indistinct future. “Creation,” made during a more hopeful time before the pandemic, looks in innocence towards a season when life begins anew. “A Misbegotten Guess” speaks of general disenchantments and things saved for ages in sorrow and hope.
There are two groups of works presented here. One is a series created while the artist was based in St Kitts and experimenting with PLA (polylactic acid), a bioplastic used in 3-D printers. The rejected pieces from the failed prints generated a great amount of material, and inspired the creation of these colorful and dynamic pieces.
The other collage and assemblage works are composed of gifts from friends and objects found; things which the artist feels have potential beyond their initial existence, and which become the basis of complex and deeply satisfying narrative works that speak to one another, and to the observer.
Ellen Burnett came to Viridian as a winner in the gallery’s 2017 International Competition, juried by Susan Thompson, an assistant curator at the Guggenheim Museum. In 2014, the artist was selected for the Director’s Choice exhibit, Viridian’s offshoot of the juried shows that gives exposure to outstanding artists. This will be the artist’s second solo exhibit at Viridian. In addition, she has been invited to participate in Art Week 2023 at the Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum in Japan in August.
